Jus-Rol is a popular ready-made pastry used for making puff pastry and short crust pastry. Many are unaware of the Alcohol content in the products. Here’s a response we got from Jus-Rol in Mar 2024:

Dear Valued Consumer,

Thank you for contacting us at Jus-Rol.

Our filo sheets and frozen pastry do not contain any alcohol, with our Chilled Pastry block and sheet products containing less than 1% alcohol. This is excluding our Filo sheets.

Our Ready to bake range contain less than 0.5% alcohol which helps maintain the shelf-life of the product. During baking the majority of the alcohol is burnt off, however there may be some residue present in the baked product.

We use neutral ethyl alcohol (or “Ethanol”) in our products which is produced from the process of yeast fermentation of Sugar beet or wheat.

It’s clear that only the Jus-Rol frozen range and all Filo products are alcohol-free. The alcohol used in other products is ethanol. There has been some difference in opinion in the use of Ethanol.

Whilst some maintain All Alcohol, even at 0.05%, is haram. Others have considered the spirit of text and public predicament element in the deen. Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, Canada says:

It would be permitted to consume drinks that have incidental traces of non-wine alcohol as long as:

a. It is not being used to intoxicate,
b. Not being used as intoxicants are used,
c. Not being used in an amount that intoxicates, and
d. Not being used for vain purposes.

This is based on the position of Abu Hanifa and has been adopted by leading scholars of our time due to the widespread use of non-wine alcohol in both food items and external products (such as soaps or lotions).

As for wine, namely alcohol derived from the fermentation of grapes and dates, it is impermissible to consume in any amount as established by clear primary texts.

The ethanol used has not been added as an ingredient per se, but a preservative. It also has not been added to intoxicate nor for vain purposes. This means it would be permissible to use Jus-Rol foods.

Scholars do stress in events of doubts, it is best to refrain. Many store-branded puff pastry sheets do not contain alcohol.
