Islamic Spiritual Milestones for Children

Birth to 2 Years

  • Recite the Adhan and Iqamah in the child’s ears after birth.
  • Play Quran recitation softly around the child to create familiarity.
  • Say simple Arabic words like Alhamdulillah, Bismillah, and Allahu Akbar to introduce Islamic vocabulary.
  • Practice gratitude and duas aloud to model the behaviour.
  • Recite protective duas (e.g., Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Nas) before sleep.
  • Recite nasheeds instead of nursery rhymes.

3 to 4 Years

  • Teach simple duas like: Bismillah before eating, Alhamdulillah after eating, Bedtime and waking duas.
  • Concept of God (Allah)
  • Introduce Allah as the Creator of everything around them.
  • Speak about Allah’s love and mercy.
  • Gratitude and Manners
  • Encourage saying Jazakallahu Khairan to express gratitude.
  • Teach the Arabic alphabet

5 to 6 Years

  • Learning Salah
  • Teach the motions of salah step by step in a playful way.
  • Memorize Surah Al-Fatihah and short surahs like Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
  • Arabic Letters and Quran Basics
  • Begin identifying simple Quranic words.
  • Teach small duas for leaving the house, entering the bathroom, etc.

7 to 8 Years

  • Encourage praying salah regularly with supervision.
  • Teach Tashahhud and Durood.
  • Start learning proper pronunciation (Tajweed).
  • Recite and memorize more short surahs.
  • Discuss simple stories from the Quran and Prophetic life to build love for Islam.
  • Teach about angels, Jannah (Paradise), and good deeds.
  • Reinforce gratitude through examples (e.g., thanking Allah for food, health, etc.).

9 to 10 Years

  • Ensure the child prays five times daily with minimal reminders.
  • Teach the significance of salah timings and cleanliness (wudu, ghusl).
  • Transition to learning more complex Quranic verses with meaning.
  • Discuss concepts of halal and haram.
  • Teach the importance of intention (niyyah) in actions.
  • Emphasize Allah’s attributes (Asma ul-Husna).

11 to 12 Years

  • Encourage full independence in performing salah and wudu.
  • Teach sunnah and nafl prayers.
  • Continue memorizing longer surahs (e.g., Surah Yaseen or Al-Mulk).
  • Teach reflection on Quranic verses and personal lessons.
  • Teach the importance of zakat, charity, and helping others.
  • Discuss fasting during Ramadan and its significance.
  • Introduce duas from the Sunnah (e.g., seeking forgiveness, protection, etc.).
  • Discuss accountability in the Hereafter and the role of good deeds.
  • Explain the importance of Ihsan (excellence) in actions.
